The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration, is conducting an alignment study,  which combines Phase I-A and Phase I-B, of the NMDOT's Location Study Procedures. The Study will review existing conditions and provide an evaluation of alternatives for New Mexico State Highway 583 (NM 583) between mileposts 0.00 to 1.49 within the City of Española, New Mexico.

Project Purpose and Need

The purpose of this study is to enhance safety for all users, improve accessibility for pedestrians and bicyclists, and address existing deficiencies related to the roadway and drainage infrastructure.

The need for improvement is based on deteriorating pavement conditions, the absence of adequate multi-modal facilities, drainage challenges, intersection alignment concerns, and the overall necessity to improve roadway safety.
